central retinal vein occlusion Flashcards
1
Q
what is the central retinal vein responsible for?
A
-draining blood from the retina
2
Q
what does the central retinal vein run through?
A
-the optic nerve
3
Q
how many veins join to form the central retinal vein?
A

Q
what does blockage of the retinal vein cause?
A
- pooling of blood into retina
- this results in leakage of fluid and blood causing macular oedema and retinal haemorrhages
- this results to release of VEGF which causes neovascularisation
- this results in damage to tissue in retina and loss of vision
6
Q
how does central retinal vein occlusion tend to present?
A
-sudden painless loss of vision
7
Q
what is seen on fundoscopy of someone with a central retinal vein occlusion?
A
- flame and blot haemorrhages
- optic disc oedema (will be swollen and will not have distinct borders)
- macular oedema (will be swollen)
- dilated tortuous veins
- dark retina
8
Q
what is the management for central retinal vein occlusion?
A
anti VEGF (ranibizumab) and laser therapy
