OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY IN MEDICAL IMAGING Flashcards
1
Q
Hazard
A
is any object, situation, or behaviour that has the potential to cause injury, ill-healthy or damage to individuals or to the environment.
2
Q
what does Occupational, Healthy and safety include.
A
- Includes the laws, standards and programs that are aimed making the workplace better for workers
3
Q
Classification of occupational hazards
A
- Safety hazards
- Biological hazards
- Physical hazards
- Chemical hazards
- Ergonomic Hazards
- Psychosocial
4
Q
Safety hazards
A
- Any type of substance, condition or object/machinery that can injure workers,
- For example;
exposed wires,
torn carpet,
wet floor,
Spills on the floor,
unguarded machinery,
moving machinery, ladders,
any raised work area
5
Q
Ergonomic hazards(risk factors)
A
- Physical conditions that may pose risk of injury to the musculoskeletal system
- Musculoskeletal disorders such as torn ligaments, muscles, injury to
tendons or nerves.
6
Q
Biological hazards
A
- Anything that pose a threat to human health when they are inhaled, eaten or when in contact with the body.
- Examples include; Airborne pathogens, radiation
6
Q
Physical hazards
A
- Any agent factor or circumstance that can cause harm with contact.
- E.G; corrosive, flammable gases, extreme temperatures, violence, slips and falls, noise, punctures, lacerations, radiation.
7
Q
Chemical hazards
A
- Any hazard caused by exposure to chemicals in the workplace.
- Acids, chlorine, glues, developing solutions, paints etc.
8
Q
pyschosocial hazards
A
- Those that can have an adverse effect on employee’s mental health or wellbeing.
- Sexual harassment, victimization, stress and workplace violence
9
Q
Job safety tips
A
- Be alert
- Maintain correct exposure:
- Take regular breaks
- use equipment properly
- Practice effective house keeping
- Use appropriate safety equipment
10
Q
Electrical safety precautions against electrical
shock
A
- Inspect the wiring of the equipment before use
- Use safe work practices every time electrical equipment is used
- Know the location and how to operate shut-off switches or circuit breakers
- Limit the use of extension cords
11
Q
Electrical safety rules
A
- All electrical equipment and appliances must be approved for
hospital use - Follow equipment manufacture’s instructions
- Equipment used on or near patients or near water must have
grounded plugs - Do not overload circuits by connecting too many devices to a
single outlet socket or outlet group.cont’d - Unplug or turn turnoff electrical equipment before exposing
internal parts - Do not attempt to repair equipment unless you are trained to do
so - Use only extension cords approved for the intended purpose
- Incase of electrical fire use carbon dioxide fire extinguisher
12
Q
Fall and collision precautionary measures
A
- Keep passageways and corridors free of obstruction
- Provide tripping hazards in the hospital corridors and passages to
avoid falls and collisions accidents - Avoid slippery floors in the imaging room and do safety rounds
- Observe patients conditions all the time and identify high risk
patients.
13
Q
Precautionary measures against spill and
chemical
A
- Alert the area occupants of the spill
- Attend to people affected by the spill
- When a spill occurs, limit access to the area and ensure that
appropriate cleaning measures are taken - Have a spill control and don personal protective equipment
appropriate for the chemicals to be handled.
14
Q
Spill and chemicals
A
- Darkroom chemicals and chemicals from other sources may spill in the work place
- Spills may pause a chemical hazard in addition to the risk of injuring patients and personnel from falls
