Group 1 License and Epilepsy
After stopping medication, have to wait 6 months before driving again.
Must be 12 months seizure free with diagnosis of epilepsy.
Irritant Contact Dermatitis
Not immune mediated. Caused by breaks in the skin leads to flaking and itching. Max time with gloves 20 mins, should use barrier creams.
Prick and patch testing not indicated.
High molecular weight compounds
Allergic responses with production of specific IgE
Usually have positive skin prick test
Atopic individuals
May return to work with enhanced protection
eg animal products insects, lab animals, plants, coffee
Low molecular weight compounds
May combine with proteins (haptens) prior to eliciting an immunological response
Specific IgE may not be detectable.
Diisocyanates, anhydrides, epoxy resins, wood dusts
Return to work is rarely possible
Sick Building Syndrome
Constellation of sx experienced by occupants of air conditioned buildings.
Work related headaches, lethargy, nasal stiffness.
Due to poor ventilation, high temp, low humidity
Humidifier Fever
A form of sick building syndrome that usually develops on Monday or the first workday of the week. The hallmark of the disease is the sudden onset of fever.
Resolves in 24 hours.

Driving and CABG
Group 1 licence - 1 month
Group 2 licence - 3 months.
Driving and Angioplasty
Group 1 - 1 month
Refusing a Group 2 Licence
- Wishing 3 months of CABG
- Uncontrolled angina, HF or arrhythmia
- Implanted defibrillator
- HTN with systolic >180 and/or diastolic >100
- Stroke or TIA within last 12 months
- Menieres Disease or sudden disabling dizziness in the past 12 months
- Major brain surgery or recent severe head injury
- Parkingons, MS
- Dementia
- Lung cancer
Single Isolate Seizures and Driving
Group 1 - 6 months after confirm dx by neurologist.
Group 2 - 5 years provided on single isolated one and none within 5 years. Not on medication.
Single isolated TIA and driving
Group 1 - 1 month
Group 2 - 12 months

Group 1 drivers reapplying for their licence after a medical condition.
Group 2 Licence Renewals
Every 5 years after age 45
Every 1 year after age 65.

Driving and short term insulin
Group 1 - If on insulin for less than 3 months, then do not need to inform DVLA. Check BMS every 2 hours

Organic Dust Toxic Syndrome
Acute inflammatory disorder LRT
Toxic reaction to organic dusts
Malaise/fever 4-6 hours after exposre
No CXR signs, Self limiting, no tx.
Dissociative seizures and DVLA
Group 1 - notify DVLA - 3 months off
Group2 - notify DVLA - 3 months off

4 times a day for 3 weeks
