Exam Practice Flashcards
Inhalable Fraction
The mass fraction of total airborne particles which is inhaled through the nose and mouth.
Respirable Fraction
The mass fraction of inhaled particles penetrating to the unciliated airways.
Airborne Particles
Measure in mg/m3
Gas/Vapours
Measured in parts per million (ppm)
Are BMGVs statuatory?
NO - only one that is Lead.
Lepd
Daily personal exposure level
Return to work and LPB
3 months - 75%
6 months - 50%
12 months - 25%
24 months - virtually none.
Aerosol
Disperse liquid/solic particles suspended in gas (usually air)
Bio Aerosol
Aerosal solid/liquid particles consisting of biological viable organisms - virus, bacteria, pollen
Gas
Formless fluid expands to occupy space. Gas at room temp
Vapours
Gaseous form of solid/liquids
Fumes
Material from volatilised solid condenses in cool air
Dusts
Solid particles made airborne
Graded dose response
Occurrence of effects in an individual response varies in severity according to dose.
Linear Curve
Quantal Dose Response
Distribution of specific response in a population
Bell shaped curve.
Differences is susceptibility to chemicals within a population (biological variation)
Spray
Aerosol of liquid droplets by mechanical disruption of bulk liquid material
Mist
Aerosol of finer liquid droplets
Smoke
Aerosol of solid or liquid particles from incomplete combustion
Otosclerosis
Conductive hearing loss at low frequencies.
In women presents after pregnancy
CAA
Civil Aviation Authority for pilots
MCA
Maritime and coastguard agency for sea farers
Divers regulation?
HSE
Assigned Protection Factor
APF
The level of respiratory protection that the respiratory is expected to provide.
Eg APF of 10 should reduce exposure by one tenth.
RPE Fit testing
Done by competent person after training.
RPE Types
Respirators - filtering device
Breathing apparatus - have source of air
Respirators
Simple once deal with particles.
Powered ones also filter gas
EPP Category 1
Procedures where hands and fingertips of the worker are usually visible out of the body most of the time.
EPP Category 2
Procedures where the fingertips may not be visible at all times but injury to the workers gloved hand from sharp instruments is unlikely.
EPP Category 3
Finger tips are out of sight for significant part of procedure. Distinct risk of injury.
Cooling Rules
Fitness for Disciplinary Investigation
- Can they understand charges
- Understand right from wrong
- Capable of representing themselves or advising friend
Occupations with Statuatory Requirements
Drivers - DVLA
Pilots - CCA
Seafarers - MCA
Divers -HSE
