MSK Flashcards
Work related MSK Disorders
- Fixed body position
- Repetitive tasks
- Force concentration on small body part
- Fast pace, no recovery
Upper limb disorder type 1
Clear diagnosis like carpel tunnel, epicondylitis
Upper limb disorder type 2
Symptomatic diagnosis with no proven pathology (diffuse non specific ULD)
Two mechanistic categories
- Static muscle activity - localised hypoxia, more neck
2. Repeated or forceful dynamic activity - repeated movements causes tissue irritation, oedema.
Epicondylitis
Electricians
de Quervains tenosynovitis
Sewing machine operators, cutters, packers
Trigger finger
Labelling gun
Tendonitis
Meat packers
Bicipital tendonitis
Mechanics
Carpel tunnel syndrome
Train drivers, cleaners
HSE 5 Steps for Risk Assessment
- Identify the hazards present
- Assess who might be harmed
- Evaluate level of risk and if further controls required
- Record findings and implement them
- Review the assessment later for change
RULA
Rapid upper limb assessment technique
For neck and UL
Generates a score to determine urgency of action.
Green 1-2, yellow 3-5, Red +6
ART
Assessment of repetitive tasks tool
12 factors into 4 stages. Numerical score, traffic light
1. Frequency and repetition
2. Force
3. Awkward position of neck/back/arm
4. Additional factors like breaks/duration
Knee Bursitis
(housemaid’s knee, clergyman’s knee)
Construction workers, carpet layers, tile setters.
Beat knee
Extreme form of knee bursitis.
Thickening of skin over knee
Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
Requires employers to assess the workplace for lifting hazards and designs systems to reduce or eliminate them.
Any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or bodily force
Yellow flags
Psychological factors
Negative attitude towards back pain
Expectation that passive rather than active tx will help
Social or financial problems
Blue flags
Workplace conditions like low degree of control
Poor interpersonal relationships. Bullying.
High work demand
Black flags
Financial dependence on benefits
Workers compensation issues
Waddle’s sign
Group of signs that may indicate non-organic or psychological components of low back pain.
3 or more is significant.
Prevention of low back pain
- Selection
- Training in manual handling
- Job modification and engineering controls
Four factors for Manual Handling Regulations
- Task
- Load
- Working environment
- Individual capacity
(TILE)
Red Flags
Absolute medical barriers to recovery.
Eg bipolar disorder, back pain due to herniated disc
Chequered flags
Social disincentives to recover
Eg spouse already retired, hobbies, care givers.
Ergonomics Assessment
Looks at all human factors involved in the task at hand.
Social, psychological and physical factors.
MAC
Manual Handling Assessment Chart
Assess lifting, carrying, team handling.
Green to Red.
PURPLE is very high level of risk
Also considers floor, psychosocial factors.
NOT FOR UPPER LIMB
NOT A FULL RISK ASSESSMENT
