Clinical manifestations sleep apnea
Frequent arousals during sleep Insomnia Excessive daytime sleepiness Witnessed apnea Morning headaches Loud snoring Personality changes Irritability
diagnosis of sleep apnea
requires documentation of
1) apneic events (no airflow with respiratory effort)
or
2) hypopnea (airflow diminished 30% to 50% with respiratory effort) for at least 10 seconds
OSA is defined as more than five apnea/hypopnea events per hour accompanied by a 3% to 4% decrease in oxygen saturation
Sleep Apnea: Conservative Treatment
for mild cases, (5 to 10 apnea/hypopnea events per hour)
Sleeping on one’s side
Sleeping with the head of the bed elevated
Avoiding sedatives and alcohol before sleep
Initiating a weight loss program if necessary
Using a special mouth guard during sleep
Treatment with CPAP
- continuous positive airway pressure
* used for patients with more than 15 apnea/hypopnea events per hour
OSP surgery
removes obstructions
