Observations Flashcards
What is covert
An undercover observation (without their knowledge)
What is overt
Open observation
What is ppt observation
Researcher takes part in activity
What is non-ppt observation
Researcher doesnt take part in activity
What is naturallistic observation
Unaltered setting
What is controlled observation
Under strict conditions.
Natural observation evaluation
High ecological validity, lack of control over extraneous variables
Controlled observation evaluation
Easy to replicate, low ecological validity
Non ppt observation evaluation
findings are objective, less bias, but might miss important details
Ppt observation evaluation
Greater insight, may be unable to stay impartial
covert evaluation
Reduced demand characteristics, unethical as privacy is invaded
Overt evaluation
ethically acceptable as consent is given, could change their behaviour.
how to make behaviour categories
Clear, unambiguous, no dustbin categories, dont overlap
What is time sampling
Observations are made a regular intervals
Strength of time sampling
Captures complex behaviours that occur over time
Weakness of time sampling
Under representative as it may occur outside of the time
What is event sampling
Behaviour is noted every time it occurs
Strength of event sampling
Representative as no behaviours are missed
Weakness of event sampling
Complex/long lasting behaviours are over simplified
What is sampling techniques
Time and event sampling
