Observational Learning SAC Flashcards
What form of learning is displayed?
Observational Learning.
Theorist associated with this form of learning?
Albert Bandura.
Name the four components of Observational Learning.
- Attention
- Retention
- Reproduction (Motivation)
- Reinforcement
Explain the Attention component of Observational Learning.
Attention must be paid to the model’s behaviour and its consequences (It is a COGNITIVE aspect of ‘OL’). Can be influenced by the characteristics of the observer such as perceptual and cognitive capabilities, and arousal level - can also be influenced by characteristics of the event.
Explain the Retention component of Observational Learning.
The learnt behaviour must be stored in memory as a mental representation so that the observed learning can be utilised at a later time.
- It is a COGNITIVE aspect of ‘OL’ because the memory must be stored and later retrieved to reproduce the behaviour.
Explain the Reproduction (Motivation) component of Observational Learning.
The learner must have the physical and intellectual ability to convert these representations into actions.
- The learner must also WANT to imitate the behaviour - depends on whether the learner believes there will be a desirable consequence.
Explain the component of Reinforcement of Observational Learning.
Influences the likelihood that a learner will imitate an observed model’s behaviour. If there is a prospect of a positive result, the learner will imitate the behaviour; if not, the learner is less likely to imitate the behaviour.
