observational learning Flashcards
observational learning
social cognitive approach to learning. occurs when someone uses observation of a models actions and consequences to guide their future actions
processes
attention
retention
reproduction
motivation
reinforcement
attention
closely watching a models behaviour and the consequences.
more likely to pay attention if we perceive the model positively, we are similar to the model, or the model is familiar
retention
you must be able to remember the models behaviour- store a mental representation of what we have observed
reproduction
we attempt to imitate what was observed. we must have the ability to put into practice what we obsserved.
motivation
we must have the desire to perform the behaviour they observed
reinforcement
Individual receives a positive consequence for the behaviour which makes
them more likely to reproduce the behaviour again in the future
external reinforcement
another person reinforces the behaviour
vicarious reinforcement
behaviour is reinforced by observing the reinforcement of another person performing the same behaviour
self-reinforcement
behaviour is reinforced through factors internal
to the individual, such as feeling proud of themselves
intrinsic motivation
occurs from within t he observer
extrinsic motivation
occurs from external factors
