Nervous System Flashcards
list nervous system divisions
central nervous system: brain, spinal cord
peripheral nervous system: somatic NS, Autonomic NS
Autonomic nervous system: sympathetic NS, parasympathetic NS
brain
area of CNS that receives and interprets information and coordinates responses in response to the stimuli
spinal cord
collection of nerve tissue that connects the PNS to the brain
function of nervous system
to receive, process, and respond to sensory information
interneuron
in the spinal cord. intercepts
spinal reflex + example
an automatic unconscious response (generated in the spinal cord) to a harmful stimulus to reduce the damage done to the body.
- picking up a hot pan the spinal cord will register its harmful and coordinate a response such as dropping it to reduce harm to the body.
afferent neurons
sensory neurons, travel on afferent pathways
efferent neurons
motor neurons, travel on efferent neural pathways
somatic NS
connects sensory receptors, skeletal muscles, to CNS. afferent/efferent
autonomic NS
connects CNS to organs, glands, and visceral (involuntary) muscles
sympathetic NS
increasing autonomic arousal. fight, flight, freeze. body prepares for s stressful or dangerous situation
parasympathetic NS
decreasing autonomic arousal. homeostasis
