Q

Describe the pathogenesis of equine obesity….

A

Evolved to rely on grass. During summer and autumn gain adiposity as they rely on fat stores in winter. However, lack of need to forage and lush food availability all year round leads to fat accumulations

Q

How can mother’d diet influence foetus risk of obesity in horses?

A

Obese mothers maintain higher conc of glucose and NEFA
Induces epigenetic changes in leptin gene
Possible permanent changes in:
+ Appetite control
+ Neuroendocrine function
+ Fuel metabolism

Q

What is the problem with feeding a low forage diet when trying to control calorie intake in the horse?

16
Q

Why does exercise increase weight loss?

A

Promotes glucose uptake and use of skeletal muscle by insulin independent route for 24 hours

Improves insulin sensitivity

Decreased feed intake

17
Q

Apart from exercise, what can increase energy expenditure in the horse?

A

Clip
Don’t rug
Have hay and water at opposite end of the field
Circumferential strip grazing

18
Q

How can you monitor weight loss in the horse?

A

Weight tape
Weight bridge
Heart girth
