Obesity Flashcards
Define the energy balance theory
Obesity can be defined as an imbalance as of energy in and energy expended via physical activity
Define Body Mass Index
Weight in kg, divided by height in meters squared
Explain the shape of Mortality of Obesity
The increased mortality at low weights may be undiagnosed diseases
What are the causes of Obesity
Obesity is not one disease; it has many causes each with a variable genetic component
One extreme is completely genetic, gene deficiencies
There are many non environmental factors - food, activities, drugs
State some health implications of Obesity
High blood pressure
Type 2 diabetes
Coronary heart diseases
More
Define Brown fat
Brown Adipose Tissue has more mitochondria and the lipid droplets are smaller
Define Adipose tissue
It’s like an energy storage depot - responsible for triacylgcerol cycle
Define Homeostatic eating
Homeostatic pathway controls energy balance by increasing the motivation to eat following depletion of energy stores
Define Hedonic eating
Reward-based regulation can override the homeostatic pathway during periods of relative energy abundance by increasing the desire to consume foods that are highly palatable
State effects of hedonic eating
Overconsumption of palatable food and associated weight gain can induce profound deficits in brain reward similar to those induced by excessive consumption of addictive drugs.
What is the misconception about breakfast
It’s widely espoused by many articles and even university professors such as Dvid Allison of University of Alabama
What happens when you exercise more
More exercise simply increased appetite and food intake offsetting energy cost making body weight static
State the two surgeries you can get for obesity
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass
Define the Obesogenic environment model
