Rules and procedures make prison life possible. Prisoners at the bottom of a hierarchy, then staff. Situational factors are used eg uniform for prisoners and staff- lose identity easy to control. Similar to using numbers not names. Although this could make them feel less responsible for actions. Guards uniform easier to give orders. For consensus it’s important not to give them a chance to agree on a riot.
