Memory Core Theory: Multi Store Model Of Memory + criticisms Flashcards
What is the duration of short term memory?
15 to 30 seconds.
What is the capacity of the short term memory?
5 to 9 chunks
OR
7 plus or minus 2 chunks
What is the capacity and duration of long term memory?
Unlimited
What does the multi store model of memory tell us?
That the human memory system is made up of a number of separate and distinct stores.
What is the multi store model of memory effected by?
Time and space
What happens to information in the sensory store without attention?
It decays
How much % of information from the sensory store reaches our STM?
1% this is the percentage we are conscious of.
We have to keep information in a loop called _____ for _____ seconds in the STM to remember it.
Maintenance Rehearsal for 30 seconds
How much % of the STM enters the LTM?
About 25%
When retrieval from the LTM is not possible what can help us remember?
A cue
What is the model too of?
The model is too rigid and ignores individual difference. Assume we are the same, doesn’t say why some people have a better memory than others. Some people must have a greater capacity. Also argues people have good memories for certain types of information.
What does the model over-simplifie?
It over-simplifies the STM and LTM. Critics argue the STM isn’t a passive store where info passes through but more active and can deal with different types of info. Also say different types of LTM stores: one for general knowledge, one for autobiographical events, one for procedures.
What does the model over-emphasise?
Over-emphasises the role of rehearsal. Not all info in the LTM is rehearsed, names/ numbers are but do we rehearse smells and tastes to store them in LTM? Also a lot in the LTM has not been rehearsed but has a meaning.
