Memory Allternative Theory: Levels Of Processing Flashcards
Explain LOP?
Shallow- when we aren’t really thinking about its meaning eg noticing a colour of a slogan or recognising a voice as male or female. We don’t process it unless we recall it.
Deep- thinking about what the writing means/ trying to understand what a person saying. More likely to recall it.
What does it believe?
That we remember things long term because they have a meaning not rehearsed. Eg bday party because it was significant. We remember details from lessons easier when we are interested because they have a meaning or we have associated them with something that had meaning. Eg a rhyme.
The LOP doesn’t believe in different stores and structure to memory ( wrong to assume limits) what does it state?
That we can remember vast amounts of info in a short time span if we can find a way of giving it meaning.
What is the test to support the LOP theory?
A group were asked to memorise a large number of real football scores in a short amount of time. Half the participants were football fans, half weren’t.
What were the findings to the LOP test? And explain…
The football fans were better at recalling the scores. This means the scores meant something to the fans (effected were their club was in the league) and so were able to deep process. But non fans weren’t interested, they were memorising meaningless numbers and were only shallow processing the info, so couldn’t recall it later.
