Nutrition in Animals Key Words Flashcards
Balanced Diet
A diet that contains all 7 food groups, in the right proportions
Digestion
A process by which large insoluble food molecules are broken down into small soluble food molecules
Mechanical Digestion
Chewing breaks up the food we eat into smaller pieces. This occurs in the mouth and stomach.
Chemical digestion
Large insoluble food molecules are broken down into smaller soluble molecules by the action of the digestive enzymes
Enzyme
A biological catalyst that speeds ip the rate of reaction
Peristalsis
Food is moved from the oesophagus and along the alimentary canal. These canals have layers of circular muscles which can contract to change shape to allow food to pass through.
Absorption
Substances are taken through the tissues into organs or cells
Assimilation
The process by which absorbed products of digestion are used to build new parts of cells.
Bile
Produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. Neutralises the acid from the stomach and breaks up large fat droplets into small fat droplets.
Egestion
The removal of undigested food from the body
Ingestion
The consumption of a substance by an organism
