Excretion Flashcards
What is excretion
The removal of metabolic waste out of the body
What is urea
Crystals compounds formed by the breakdown of amino acids
Where is urea made
Liver
How do the lungs remove carbon dioxide
Liver to the lungs, is dissolved in blood plasma. It then diffuses into the alveoli before being exhaled into the atmosphere
How does the skin get rid of sweat
It is secreted n the surface, then is taken away by evaporation
What is the function of the kidney
Acts as an excretory and homeostatic organ by filtering the blood of urea and water
How does ultrafiltration work
Small vessels in the glomerulus create resistance to the blood flow, increasing the pressure
The increased pressure forces smaller molecules out of the blood
What is filtered out of the blood
Water
Glucose
Salts
Urea
By which process is glucose reabsorbed by
Active Transport
What is osmoregulation
The controls of water levels within the blood
When dehydrated is more or less ADH released
More, so increased permeability of collecting duct
Describe what happens just after you drink loads of water
Detected by osmorreceptors in the hypothalamus
Pituitary gland produces less ADH
Kidney reabsorbs less water
Collecting duct becomes impermeable
What is Dialysis
A method of filtering person’s blood by using a machine/ The procedure removes most of the urea from the blood and helps to maintain the water and ion balance
Give a consequence of kidney failure
Unable to remove waste products from the blood, and so will reach dangerously high levels
Give some drawbacks of a kidney transplant
Body might not accept done (has to have similar tissue type and blood group)
Antigens
immune rejection
Immune surpassed drugs
