Nutrition & Growth 6B1 Flashcards
What are the 4 parts of a plant?
Roots, Stem, Leaves, Flowers
What do roots do (2 things, incl detail)?
- ANCHOR the plant to the ground
2. ABSORB water and minerals through the ROOT HAIR CELLS.
Why are Root Hair Cells designed like they are (2)?
Larger/huge SURFACE AREA, so faster/better ABSORPTION.
What does the STEM do (2, with detail)?
- TRANSPORTS water and nutrients up and around the plant.
- HOLDS UP the leaves and flowers, so they are higher, and more likely to get sunlight for photosynthesis, or to successfully pollinate by Seed Dispersal.
What do the Leaves do (2, with detail)?
- Make sugars by PHOTOSYNTHESIS
2. for TRANSPIRATION (water evaporates through stomata, which draws up more water).
Photosyntheisis - chemical reaction?
6(CO2) + 6(H2O) (with sunlight hitting chloroplasts) = C6H1206 + 6(O2)
(numbers are subscript)
What do plants need to make sugars (3)?
light, water, air
What is it called when plants or animals burn sugars in oxygen to release energy?
Respiration.
When do plants Respire?
All the time.
When do they Photosynthesise (make sugar)?
During daylight.
What will happen to plants in the absence of light (4)?
- plants will grow FASTER
- but will be YELLOW and SPINDLY
- eventually they will DIE
- as they cannot make SUGAR which gives them the ENERGY they need to grow/survive.
What else do plants need to survive?
Minerals
What main types of minerals do plants need?
Phosphates and Nitrates
What if plants have not enough phosphates?
Poor roots, and Purple new leaves
What if plants don’t have enough nitrates?
Yellow leaves and stunted growth
