8B.2b - Senses and Systems Flashcards
Name the 5 senses, and the organs involved (10)
- Hearing (and balance) - EARS
- Sight (eyes)
- Touch (skin)
- Taste (tongue)
- Smell (nose)
What’s the name of the system of organs that controls the body?
Central nervous system
What are the components of the Central Nervous System? (4)
- Brain
- Spinal cord
- NERVES, with
- SENSORS
Explain the steps by which we SENSE and REACT (5, with 5 for explanations)
- Sensors DETECT a STIMULUS
- A signal/impulse is SENT along nerves to the SPINE/BRAIN
- An ACTION is DECIDED upon, either in the spine or in the brain
- A signal is SENT BACK along nerves to the MUSCLES
- Our muscles MOVE to react REACT to the STIMULUS
Give an example of a decision that may take place in the spine
Surprising sharp pain from stepping on a pin. Jump up without thinking,
Give an example of a decision that may take place in the brain
Smell of a fart in the air. Open car window.
What else do animals use (other than nerves) to send information about the body? (2)
HORMONES, which are CHEMICAL MESSENGERS in the blood.
Are Hormones slower or faster than nerves at sending signals?
Slower
Give 2 examples of what hormones control.
Puberty, growth, development, blood composition
Do plants sense anything?
Yes, they can sense light, water, direction. But they react a lot slower.
