8B2c Reproduction in Plants Flashcards
What do sepals do? (1)
Protect the flower bud
How does the flower attract animals (mainly insects)? (2)
SCENT and COLOURED PETALS
Describe the MALE parts of the flower (5)
STAMENS (FILAMENT holding up an ANTHER) produce POLLEN GRAINS - which contain the MALE GAMETES (gamete = sex cell)
Describe the FEMALE parts of a flower (5)
CARPELS (STICKY STIGMA, STYLE, and OVARIES) contains the OVULES - female gametes
What are the 4 main stages of Reproduction in a plant?
Pollination, Fertilisation, Dispersion, Germination
What is POLLINATION? (4)
Pollen is carries from the ANTHER of the male STAMENS to the STICKY STIGMA of the female CARPEL
What is FERTILISATION? (11)
The POLLEN grain GROWS a TUBE through the STYLE to the OVARIES. The pollen NUCLEUS then TRAVELS down and FUSES with a NUCLEUS of an OVULE in the OVARY.
What is DISPERSION? (4)
The OVULES DEVELOP into SEEDS and the CARPEL often becomes a FRUIT.
What is GERMINATION? (2)
When, under the RIGHT CONDITIONS (water, warmth, air), the seed then STARTS TO GROW.
What happens in Germination? (3)
- The ROOT grows FIRST (to anchor, and collect water)
- Then the SHOOT grows.
The seed uses energy from its food store.
What are the 2 main methods of pollination, and in each case how is pollen designed for the job? (2 + 2)
- ANIMALS (usually insects) - pollen is STICKY.
2. WIND/WATER (gives us hayfever) - pollen is FEATHERY and LIGHT
Give 5 kinds of SEED DISPERSAL, and an example of each (10)
- WIND (sycamore)
- WATER (coconuts)
- EATEN by ANIMALS (berries, fruits)
- CARRIED by ANIMALS (burrs)
- EXPLOSIONS (peas)
