Nutrition Flashcards
Calcium
Positive. Primary cation of bone and teeth formation. Essential for blood clotting, muscle and nerve function, etc…
Chloride
Negative. Part of HCL is formed in the stomach. Important in acid-base balance
Cobalt
Positive. Part of vitamin B12, essential for erythropoiesis
Copper
Positive. Needed (along with iron) for hemoglobin synthesis. A huge part of ETC proteins
Fluoride
Negative. Gives teeth structure and protects teeth
Iodide
Negative. Needed by the follicular cells of the thyroid to synthesize T3 and T4. Now common in table salt
Iron
Positive. Maybe the most limiting mineral. Component of hemoglobin that binds the O2 molecule. Part of EC proteins. You’ll be anemic without enough
Magnesium
Positive. Supplements Ca in bone formation and normal function of muscles and nerves
Phosphorus
Negative. With Ca, forms bones & teeth. Critical for energy transfer (ADP & ATP). Part of DNA and RNA
Potassium
Positive. Needed for APs in neurons and muscle fibers. Essential to hearing transduction
Sodium
Positive. Critical for nerve and muscle AP. Its uptake drives water movement via osmosis
Zinc
Positive. Part of Carbonic anhydrase. Needed for wound healing. component of peptidase (protein digestion)
