Unsaturated fats
Are oils and have less potential for raising cholesterol levels. It’s less dense and heavy
Saturated fats
Are solid at room temperature. This type of fat raises LDL.
What is fiber? Good sources for fiber?
Fiber is a complex carbohydrate that humans cannot digest.
Sources are: whole grains, beans, nuts, fruits w/skin, and vegetables.
What are vitamins? What vitamins are fat-soluble, water-soluble?
Vitamins are organic substances the body needs for various cellular functions.
Fat-soluble vitamins: K, A, D, E,
Water-soluble: B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, C, Folate, pantothenic acid, biotin,
What are fats?
Fats or lipids are a highly concentrated source of energy the body uses as a backup for available glucose.
What are proteins?
Proteins are large, complex molecules the body makes from amino acids.
Ex: nuts, seeds, seafood, meat, poultry, beans, eggs, and soy products
What are carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates are organic compounds that combine carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen into sugar molecules and come primarily from plant sources.
What are some simple sugars?

- Honey, candy, cane sugar
- Fruits, vegetables, cereal, pasta, rice, beans, whole-grain products
What are minerals?
Minerals are inorganic substances the body needs in small quantities for building and maintaining body structures.
Ex: calcium, Magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, iron
What are the five major food groups you should eat daily?
Fruits Grains Vegetables Protein Dairy
What are some signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa?
Self-starvation, perfectionism, fear of weight gain, excessive exercising, amenorrhea (no menstrual cycle), denial of feeling hungry.
What are signs and symptoms of bulimia nervosa?
Buying and consuming large amounts of food, purging after eating, using laxatives/diuretics, mood swings, and using the bathroom immediately after eating.
What is binge-eating disorder?
Similar to bulimia nervosa, without the purging behavior. With this disorder people chronically overeat leading to weight gain and obesity.
What is parenteral nutrition?
Nutrients delivered intravenously (into a vein)
What is nasogastric feedings?
Delivery of formula through a tube that goes from the nose to the stomach.
