Nutrition Flashcards
H2RA
- tidine
- famotidine
- ranitidine
- cimetidine
Block histamine 2 which decreases production of grastic acid
Treat / prevent GIB & Ulcers
PPI
prazole
- pantoprazole
- omelrazole
- esomeprazole
⬇️ acid that is pumped into the stomach
Treat/prevent GIB and ulcers
Risk of taking H2RA and PPI
Metabolic alkalosis
Decreasing acid in the body
Antacids
- Tums ( Calcium Carbonate )
- malox/ mylanta- aluminum hydroxide & magnesium
- buffers- alkaline substance that neutralize acid
Problem with antacids
Overused
Should not be used for daily stomach problems — mask symptoms of gastric cancer
Only use for stomach pain related to food
Older people have harder time getting rid of aluminum and magnesium— toxic
** use 1hr after meals
Triple therapy for H. Pylori
1 antibiotic ( clarithromycin, amoxicillin)
Bismuth “pepto”
Pantoprazole (PPI)
Why not give PPI with other drugs like clolidogrel, phenytoin and warfarin
Altering the stomach acid, alters drug metabolism
Some drugs need acidic environment
meclizine
Anticholinergics
dry up secretions to decrease gastric acid which might cause N/V.
very drying and can cause blurred vision, urinary retention, dry mouth and constipation.
ondansetron
antiemetic that works to decrease nausea without causing CNS depression and risks for injury which is often seen with phenothiazines such as promethazine.
dronabinol
synthetic form of cannabis that is used to reduce nausea and stimulate appetite in patients with cancer and AIDs. It is used to help prevent cachexia.
