Anesthesia Flashcards
General
Intravenous
Propofol & ketamine
Loss of consciousness and cessation of painful stimuli
May be reversed quickly
Once stopped pt on propofol will awake w/in 5 min
Benzodiazepines
Alprazolam, lorazepam, diazepam, & midazolam
Anxiety disorders alcohol withdrawal seizures agitation preoperative relief
Act in limbic system to make GABA more effective
Adverse effects of benzodiazepines
Sedation drowsiness depression lethargic blurred vision sleep driving headaches lightheadedness amnesia confusion
Mild paradox sought excitatory reaction may occur during the first two weeks
At risk for falls or other injuries related to sedative effects
Benzodiazepine antagonist
Flumazenil
Used for overdose or to reverse sedation with medication’s (like midazolam) are used during procedures
Nitrous oxide
Inhale gas to use for anesthesia
Hi affinity for fatty tissue and is Lipo feel like including the lipid membrane of the nerves in the CNS
Gas passes quickly into the brain and causes severe CNS depression
One patient is in stage three of anesthesia the anesthesiologist regulates the amount of gas that is delivered to insure patients unconsciousness but not enough to cause severe CNS depression
Moves quickly in and out of body
Reversed by administration of oxygen or encouraging patient to breathe deeply
Local anesthetic
Lidocaine
Local area of tissue needs
Dental work, skin biopsies, sutures
