Nutrient requirements Flashcards
What does EAR stand for
Estimated average requirement
What is the EAR a measure of
Estimated average requirement of energy or a nutrient for a population where approximately 50% will require more and 50% will require less (baseline intake for energy on nutrition labels)
What does RNI stand for
Reference nutrient intake
What is the RNI a measure of
The amount of a nutrient that meets nearly all (97.5%) of a population daily requirement (two SDs to right of mean/median) used as baseline value on nutrition labels for all nutrients apart from energy
What does the LRNI stand for
Lower reference nutrient intake
What is the LRNI a measure of
The amount of a nutrient that will meet the needs of the minority of the population who have a lower requirement (2.5% of population) (2SDs to left)
What is safe intake
A range of intakes for almost all individuals needs but not so high to cause undesirable effects
When is safe intake used
For nutrients where there is insufficient information to estimate requirements more precisely
What is the UL
Tolerable upper intake level that is likely to pose no risk of adverse effects in almost all individuals in a population
What is the NOAEL and LOAEL
the no observed adverse effect level (highest intake with no effect) and lowest observed adverse effect level (lowest intake with effect) of a nutrient
