What complications can be common post op?
Respiratory or Cardiac Complications
How often should incentive spirometer be used post op?
At least 10x / hr
partial or complete collapse of the lung that can cause shortness of breath and other symptoms
Atelectasis
Antiembolic stockings example & why are they used?
TEDS stockings
SCD stockings
To prevent BLOOD CLOTS & swelling in legs;
Helps w/ circulation
stockings that wrap around legs, inflate & deflate w/air, mimicking the action of walking; helps blood move from the legs to heart,
SCD stockings
stockings that apply pressure to the veins in the legs to prevent blood clot and swelling in leggings
TEDs stockings
Why is ambulation important post op?
It awakens bowels
Important to check these things when pt is using antiembolic stockings
Pedal pulse- checking for circulation
Heels & toes- for pressure ulcers
Why is coughing & deep breathing important post op?
Promote air exchange & prevent atelectasis and pneumonia
Appropriate sitting position post up
45 or 60 or 90 degrees
Coughing post op can be contraindicated w/ some surgeries like
Eye or brain surgeries (coughing would increase pressure in those areas)
How to cough?
Fowler’s or sitting position
Take deep breath and hold for 3 seconds…
Take deep cough 2-3 times
stack coughing
How often should cough and deep breathing be performed post op?
Every 2-3 hrs post op
