- Military: crusades; all male nurses, cleanliness during this time. (Red Cross on suits of armor to distinguish them from the soldiers).

- Catholic Nation States: Nuns would care for the ill
- Protestant Nation States: England, Germany, Netherlands
- The “Dark Ages of Nursing”: criminals, prostitutes, etc., we’re now caring for the ill. There were no male caregivers.
When looking into the more Formalized Nursing Role, what do the 18th-19th centuries and the Industrial Revolution contribute to the Nursing Role?
18th-19th Centuries: Males are in the dominant “boss” role, where females are the nurses.
Industrial Revolution: the criminals are no longer in the nursing role, the “domestics” are now Nurses caring for the ill.
