inability to achieve or maintain an erection for sexual intercourse. also called impotence. can be organic or functional
erectile dysfunction
gradual deterioration of function. caused by inflammation of the prostate, urethra and seminal vesicles, smoking and alcohol abuse, anti-hypertensive drugs, endocrine disorders (DM), lumbosacral injuries, vascular diseases (HTN), and chronic neurologic conditions.
causes of organic erectile dysfunction
the brain function directly impacts the man’s ability to have an erection. still able to have normal nocturnal and morning erections. related to periods of high stress. only accounts for 5% of cases.
functional erectile dysfunction
Advancing age Diseases (esp. DM and heart disease) Obesity Trauma Medical Treatments (antihistamines, antidepressant and medications used to treat prostate cancer) Use of drugs (prescription or illicit) Alcohol/Drug abuse
risk factors for erectile dysfunction
drug therapy Phosphodiesterace-5 inhibitors (PDE-5)
Sildenafil 20 mg (Viagra: little blue pill)
Vardenafil 5 mg
Tadalafil 5 mg
medical treatment for erectile dysfunction
- take 1 hour before sexual intercourse. must be sexually stimulated in order to work.
- advised to go to the emergency room if erection lasts longer than 4 hours and/or if experiencing chest pain after ingestion of medication.
