Nucleic Acids Flashcards
What is the function of nucleic acids?
store and transfer important genetic information
what is DNA?
genetic information and instructions
where is DNA located?
in the nucleus of cells
Is DNA different in all people?
Yes, DNA is 100% different in all people, except for in identical twins
What is RNA
RNA is a molecule that “reads” and builds protein based off of genetic information
what is the monomer of nucleic acids?
nucleotides
what differs in DNA and RNA
DNA and RNA have different nucleotides. In DNA, the D stands for deoxyribose. In RNA, the R stands for ribose) The thymine in DNA is different than the Uracil located in RNA.
What is ATP made of?
nucleotide with three phosphate groups
how does ATP gain energy?
gains energy by breaking bonds in the last phosphate group through hydrolysis
