NSTM 079 - Practical Damage Control Flashcards
What are the three tiers of response to Damage Control Conditions of Readiness?
Flying Squad, Condition II DC, General Quarters
This team is the first response at Condition III
Flying Squad
This team is the first responders while inport
Flying Squad
While the ship is inport, the Flying Squad is backed up by which team?
Import Emergency Team
What is the primary purpose of the Flying Squad?
Respond to casualties and determine extent of damage
Who are the three members of the Rapid Response team?
Fire Marshall, Electrician, Rapid Responders
This condition allows DC response without disrupting tactical watch stations
Condition II DC
Storage spaces are designated with what letter?
A
C2 spaces are designated with what letter?
C
Engineering spaces are designated with what letter?
E
HAZMAT spaces are designated with what letter?
K
Ammunition spaces are designated with what letter?
M
What are the 3 basic material conditions of readiness?
X-Ray, Yoke, Zebra
What condition of readiness is used inport?
X-Ray
What condition of readiness is used while underway?
Yoke
What condition of readiness is used during GQ?
Zebra
What condition allows for fitting to be opened without special permission of access spaces?
Circle X-Ray or Circle Yoke
What fittings are closed during darken ship conditions?
Dog Zebra
Ventilation fittings are marked with what classification?
William
How is the main drainage system segregated and how are they classified?
By bulkhead stop valves, classified as Circle X-Ray
What type of drainage is utilized in compartments above the waterline?
Gravity drains
Where are most gravity drains discharged to?
Over the side through scuppers
How are portable pumps discharged?
Overboard discharge connections, which have screw caps (not valves), and use a 4 inch pipe
What device must be used when pumping combustible liquids?
Must use eductors, and use a non-contaminated water source
Following an underwater explosion, if there is threat of the ship breaking apart, what is the primary response when possible?
Beach the vessel
Following an underwater explosion, if there is compression damage amidships, the following 6 steps should be taken
- Reduce speed
- Change course to minimize pitch, hogging, and sagging
- Examine for damage, check fuel tanks
- Proceed to safe anchorage
- Commence repairs en route if possible
- Consider beaching if damage is severe or heavy weather is imminent
How is Sagging dangers mitigated?
Correct trim by moving liquid from amidships to fore and aft, or centerfold the high end
How is Hogging counteracted?
Move liquid from ends of ship to amidships, flood amidships tanks
What is the primary purpose of shoring?
To support weakened structures and bulkheads
This is a portable beam used for reinforcing or adding strength to a bulkhead or deck
Shore
This is a flat plate that is added undertake end of a shore to distribute weight or pressure
Shole
This is a bar or beam, often shorter than a shore, used to distribute pressure or serve as an anchor for a patch over a hole
Strongback
What is the relationship between the thickness and length of a Shore?
Length can be 2.5 times the thickness - for example, a 4 inch thick shore can be 10 feet long
List 7 advantages to metal shoring to wooden
- Fireproof
- Prefabricated and adjustable
- Stronger
- Saves Space
- Welded shores will not slide or jump
- Repairs can be semi-permanent
- Greater number of types of repairs
What is the disadvantage of using metal shoring vice wood?
Can be spark producing
