November 6 Flashcards
Epidemiology
The study of occurance, distribution, and determinants of health and disease in a population
Infectious diseases
Cause fewer deaths than non-infectious disease in developed countries, worldwide infectious disease accounts for 30% of death
Epidemiologist
Trace spread of disease, where it originated, mode of transmission
Epidemic
Disease occurs in an unusually large group of people in a population at the same time
Pandemic
Worldwide epidemic
Endemic
Always present (consistantly present) but in low quantities
Two Ways A Microbial Population Can Acquire Antibiotic Resistance
1) Chromosomal mutation
2) R plasmids
The more an antibiotic is used the more resistant strains of bacteria.
Little or no research and development in antibiotics because there is no money in it, antibiotics are not used often
Multiple Resistance and Cross-Resistance
Resistance to more than one drug at a time- most often occurs via R-plasmids
Most common in hospitals and nursing homes because of constant use of drugs, this eliminates sensative cells (natural selection)
Cross-resistance: resistance to similar drugs
