Norman Exam 1 Flashcards
Characteristics of Good Design
Discoverability (The ease of figuring out what actions are possible) and Understanding (How to use the object)
Industrial Design
The professional service of creating optimized products and systems
Interaction Design
Design with a focus on optimizing the human-object interaction
Experience Design
Design with a focus on the overall experience of use
Human-centered Design
Design with the capabilities and needs of humans in mind and optimizes based on those factors
Signifiers
The signaling component of signifiers

System Image
The available information of a system that allows us to form a conceptual model
7 Stages of Action
Goal -> Plan -> Specify (action) -> Perform (action) -> Perceive (environment) -> Interpret (the perception) -> Compare (outcome with goal)
Levels of Processing
Visceral (Quick and subconscious), Behavioral (Subconscious action from learned skill), Reflective (Conscious cognition) Design must take place at all 3
Root Cause Analysis
Investigating an accident to find a single, underlying cause
Capture Slip
Instead of desired action, a more recent or frequent action “captures” the activity
Description-Similarity Slip
Acting upon an object similar to the target
