Normal Thyroid She Wants Us To Know Flashcards

1
Q

Explain how we get thyroid hormone into circulation and the major players involved? What is the big picture net effect?

A

Hypothalamus is simulated to release TRH to activate the pituitary to stimulate the release of TSH. TSH heads down to the thyroid gland to stimulate the release of thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is released in the form of mostly T4 and a little T3. At the tissue level, T$ is converted into T3 because of its higher affinity for thyroid receptors. Net effect, increase metabolic rate.

Q

What are the two ways propythiouracil inhibits thyroid hormones?

A

Block the oxidation of iodide which is responsible for the synthesis of thyroid hormones.
