To see if tone of voice has any effect when interpreting a verb message
Method- listened to friends or hostile messages in friendly or hostile tones of voice, the. Reversed for diff participants.
Results- when asked to interpret message tone of voice had about 5x the effect of the verbal message
Conclusion- tone of voice is extremely important in how people interpret verbal messages

Passing info from one person to another

Giving prominence to some words more than other
Eye contact
When two people in conversation are looking at each other’s eyes at the same time
Argyle
Aim- to see how interrupting eye contact affects conversation
Method- participants in pairs have a convo 1/2 of them wear dark glasses
Results- when had dark glasses there were more interruptions and pauses
Conclusion- eye contacts is important in ensuring the smooth flow of convo
Hemispheres of the brain
The human brain is divided into two halves called the left and the right hemispheres
Sackeim
Aim- to look at the relationship between facial expressions and the hemispheres of the Brain
Method- pics of faces cut in half, new images made with a mirrored face, participants asked which they preferred.
Results- most preferred left half with reflection cos it looked warmer
Conclusion- left expresses more emotion than the right side
Mcginley
Aim- see the effect of postural echo when havin a convo
Method- confederate, had convo with people and echoed their position, then didnt do the echo, then asked what they thought
Results- got on well when they echoed posture and felt awkward when didn’t echo
Conclusion- postural echo gives an unconscious sense of friendliness
Touch
Non verbal communication when info is conveyed by pysical contact between people
Gesture
Non verbal communication where info is conveyed by either deliberate or unconscious movement of parts of the body
