What are some facts to know about Campbylobacter Infection?

A

Some may have no sx
Usually in kids, resolves in 2 weeks
Causes 95% of travelers diarrhea
Results from ingestion of animal products
Causes a non inflammatory diarrhea in developing countries
Can be associated with bacteremia, meningitis, reactive or purulent arthritis
Guillan Barre Syndrome
Macrolides are the drugs of choice.

What are some facts about non Typhoid Salmonella infections?

A
Illness lasts 3 to 7 days
Temp as high as 103 degrees for 3 days
Contracted from food animals
usually in the summer
increased in those with HIV
use 3rd generation Cephalosporins or FQ for enteric fevers

A

Frequent, small volume bloody mucoid stools.
Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome- occurs days 1 thru 5 post diarrhea labs show low Hgb and platelets with high bun and Creatinine

How is Shigellosis treated?

A

in the 3rd World, start Nalidixic Acid ASAP. Other treatment include FQ, Zithromax and 3rd Generation Cephalosporins. Drug of choice in USA is TMP/SMX
