Night Ops Flashcards
2 types of light-sensitive cells in retina of eye
rods and cones
what is function of the cones, and where are they in the eye
used to detect color, detail, far away things. located in center of retina. (less send to light)
function of rods and where in eye are they
detect objects that are moving out of peripherals. back of eye/retina
Avg time it takes for rods and cones to adapt to darkness
cones - 5-10 min. rods - 30 min
What should pilot do to accommodate to changing light conditions
avoid bright lights and allow enoughg time for eyes to adapt to low level lights
examples of illusions related to ground lighting conitions
- stationary lights might be mistaken for stars or oter aircraft.
- black hole approach where coming to land and no leading lights until runway
What illusion during takeoff makes u feel as if u have too high nose up attitude?
Somatogravic illusion caused by rapid acceleration during takeoff.
When approaching at a well lit runway surrounded by dark area what illusion should pilot be aware of?
Featureless terrain illusion
What should pilot do to maintain good eyesight?
keep physical condition good. EX: vitamin deficiency alcohol, stimulants medication can diminish eyesight
What can pilot do to improve effectiveness of vision at night?
Adapt eyes to night(30 min), close one eye when exposed to bright light, dont wear sunglasses after sunset, move eyes more slowly than in daylight
Equipmnet should pilots have for night flight?
Flashlight white/red/blue to read charts, batteries, aeronautical charts
Explain arrangement and interpretation of position lights on aircraft?
Red is on the left wingtip. Green light on right wingtip. White light on tail. (Know which lights u see too, from, right and left)
When are position lights req. to be on?
sunset to sunrise
When aircraft is opperated in or close proximity to night opp area, what is required of an aircraft?
- Clearly Illuminated
- Have lighted position lights or be in area marked by obstruction lights
Are aircraft anticollision lights req to be on during night flight opp?
Yes
3 Definitons of night?
- CFR 1.1 - time b/w end of evining civil twihlight and beginning of morning civil twilight. Use when loggining night flight time
- CFR 61.57 - one hur after sunset and before sunrise. Use when determnining currency to act as PIc to carry passengers.
- CFR 91.209 - sunset to sunrise. Use to determine when req to have anti-collision lights on.
What are runway end indicator lights (REIL)?
indicate end of runway to provode rapid and positive identification of end of runway.
Describe runway edge light system?
Outline runways during darkness, are white.
What are the different taxiway lights?
Taxiway edge lights - blue
Taxiway centerline lights- steady green lights
Clearance bar lights - steady burning yellow lights
runway guard lights- either side, flashing lights, or yellow
Stop bar lights - used to confirm atc clearance to enter or cross active runway, elevated red lights `
different types of rotating beacons used to identify airports?
White and green, also just green alone - lighted land airport
White and yellow, also just yellow stone - lighted water airport
2 White then green - military
