Weight and Balance
what is an airworthiness certificate
issued by FAA that aircraft has meet the minimum requirements and is in condition for safe operation
difference between standard and special airworthiness certificates
standard (white paper) - issued for normal, utility, acrobatic, commuter, or transport category
special (pink paper) - issued for primary, restricted, or limited category and light sport aircraft
experimental flight certificate
issued to operate an aircraft that doesn’t have a type certificate or doesn’t conform to its type certificate, yet is in a condition for safe op.
does airworthiness certificate expire
no, as long as aircraft meets approved type design, in condition for safe op, and maintenance is are performed in accordance with parts 21, 43, 91
where must airworthiness certificate be located
displayed at cabin or cockpit entrance so its visible/legible for passengers and crew
for an aircraft to be airworthy, what 2 things must it have
it must conform to its type design and be in a condition for safe operation in reference to wear and tear
how can a pilot tell that an aircraft conforms to type design and is in condition for safe op?
- pilot must determine that maintenance has been performed in accordance to parts 21, 43, and 91 and that the aircraft is registered in the US.
- For safety, the pilot conducts a thorough preflight inspection for wear and tear
what must be checked for completed ADs and all required inspections
the maintenance records/aircraft logbook
who is responsible for making sure that each aircraft is maintained in an airworthy condition
the owner or operator of an aircraft that is responsible of maintaining an aircraft in an airworthy condition
responsibilities of an aircraft owner
- have current airworthiness certificate and registration
- maintain aircraft in airworthy condition
- ensure maintenance is properly recorded
- notify FAA registry of change of address
- have current FCC radio station license
what an Airworthiness Directive
FAA notifies aircraft owners/others of unsafe condition that may exist which is specified in the AD
2 types of AD’s are…
one of emergency nature that requires immediate compliance before further flight and one that is less urgent but must be complied to during specific time period
when are emergency ADs issued
when an unsafe condition exists that requires immediate action by the owner/operator
if you miss an AD time or date, can you still fly until the next required inspection
no
can you ferry an aircraft back to another airport where the maintenance can be done
yes you can under the special flight permit rules of 21.199
what is a supplemental type certificate
FAA’s approval of a major change in type design
what is an aircraft registration
certificate to register it with the FAA aircraft registry
does an aircraft registration expire
yes
when would an aircraft registration expire
three years after the last day of the month that it was issued
where can you find placard and marking info required to be in the airplane?
the FAA type certificate data sheet or aircraft specifications
required tests and inspections on the aircraft
Annual Inspection (12 cal months)
VOR Check (30 days)
100 hour
Altimeter (24 cal months)
Transponder test (24 cal months)
ELT (12 cal months)
what is an annual inspection
complete inspection of the aircraft and engine every 12 calendar months
who can do and sign off on an annual inspection
an A&P technician holding an IA (inspection authorization
what aircraft are required to have an 100 hour inspection
all aircraft under 12,500 lbs used to carry passengers (except for turbojet/turbo-propeller powered multi-engine airplanes) and aircraft used for flight instruction for hire when the person is giving flight instruction
is an aircraft required to have a 100-hour inspection as well as an annual inspection if it is operated for hire
yes since it is operated for hire
difference between 100hr and annual
whose allowed to perform the inspection. No IA is required for an A&P mechanic for the 100-hour
can you exceed an 100 hour inspection
no more than 10 hours while en route to place where inspection can be done
can you operate an aircraft past its annual inspection
yes, under a special flight permit bay the FAA to bring aircraft to a place where it can be performed
what is a special flight permit
flight permit issued for an aircraft that may not meet applicable airworthiness requirements but is capable of safe flight
purposes of a special flight permit
- flying aircraft back to base where repairs/alterations/maintenance can be performed
- delivering/exporting an aircraft
- production flight testing new-production aircraft
- evacuating aircraft from area of danger (hurricane, tornado, etc)
- conducting customer demonstration flights in new-production aircraft
how are special flight permits obtained
assistance and the necessary forms may be obtained from local FSDO or DAR (Designated Airworthiness Representative)
after all inspections have been made, who is responsible for determining that the aircraft is in an airworthy condition
the PIC of the aircraft
what regs apply concerning operation of aircraft that’s had alterations or repairs which may have substantially affected its flight ops
nobody can operate or carry a passenger in an aircraft that has undergone maintenance, preventative maintenance, rebuilding, or alteration that changed flight characteristics or flight ops
what rating must be held for a pilot and what must that pilot do for an aircraft to be operated by and hold passengers that just got maintenance
private pilot and they must fly the aircraft, make an operational check on maintenance performed, and log the flight in the aircrafts record
can a pilot legally fly with known inop equipment
yes as long as it is not listed as a required instrument or in an MEL, part 91.205 as well… W
if you notice that an aircraft has an instrument that is inoperative, how can you check if you need it
in the aircraft’s MEL or in the KOEL of the aircraft and in part 91
what is an MEL
minimum equipment list that lists the minimum equipment needed for aircraft operations
required equipment
A TOMATO FLAMES part 91.205
who can perform maintenance on an aircraft
FAA-certified A&P Mechanic, A&P mechanic with an IA, appropriately-rated FAA-certificated repair station, or aircraft manufactuer
what is preventative maintenance
simple or minor preservation operations and replacement of small standard parts not involving complex assembly ops.
who can perform preventative maintenance
any certificated pilot excluding student pilots, sport pilots, and recreational pilots provided its not in air carrier service
where to find items for preventative maintenance
part 43, appendix a - paragraph C
what logbook entry info is required for preventative maintenance
entry in the maintenance record or aircraft
what must the entry of the maintenance record for preventative maintenance have
description of work, date of completion, entry of pilots name, signature, certificate number, and type of certificate held
can you fly the airplane if the time between overhaul has exceeded its time?
yes because the TBO is just computed by the engine manufacturer
reasons to comply with the TBO (time between overhaul)
ensure safety and reliability, cheaper to overhaul at the overhaul time, and running it past the TBO can accelerate the overall wear and tear of the engine
