some people more capable
Murray
Bell curve
IQ is important for life success and that differences between racial groups in life success can be attributed in part to differences in IQ. These differences could be genetic
Underclass - single parents can’t effectively socialise children. leads to more criminals, cycle of deprevation
Education needs improving…
- should not be run by the state (privatisation)
- politicians shouldn’t impose views + opinions on education
- shouldn’t be a one size fits all
- parents/employers should’t have little to no say
Increase competition
Too much collaboration and fairness in education fails to provide people with the drive and ambition to achieve in today’s society.
Should be competition within schools + between schools. As well as socialising pupils with the skills to prosper in a market economy, this will also drive up educational standards too, as schools try to attract customers (parents) with impressive results.
Ball, Gerwitz, Leech + Campos
British Values
create a national identity
assimulation - helping other countries adopt
e.g. holidays = easter + christmas
anglocentric curriculum (Giroux)
Chubb + Moe
USA private schools perform better than schools in the public sector was because the schools were answerable to paying parents.
voucher system - parents receive a voucher which is used to buy a place at a school. Schools sell themselves to get vouchers.
(shift to privatisation)
No state funding
increase quality of education
could lead to sink schools
Ball + Youdell
centralised fragmentation
move away from centralised control, e.g government
alternative methods of funding
exogenous (outside): academy chains, exam boards, tech, business investing
endogenous (inside): vending machines, buildings, formula funding - sponsorships, marketisation
