New Right Flashcards
What is the New Right ?
Worried functionalists
Key sociologist- Charles Murray
New rights role of education?
Socialisation- to pass on a shared national culture
Skills- teach skills to get jobs so families are self reliant- men should be the primary earners and be equipped to get jobs to provide for their family
Why is the new right worried about education?
State control
One size fits all
Lower standards
State control-
Resulted in inefficiency as there is a lack of business incentive, schools are not trying hard enough as they do not have a motive
Evaluation for state control
Functionalists are more positive about state control of education and believe that it is an efficient education system
One size fits all
Does not meet individuals and community needs as all pupils are taught the same national curriculum
Evaluation for one size fits all
Functionalists- it’s more fairer if all pupils are taught the thing
Lower standards
Not accountable to those who use them (parents and employees) instead answer to local authorities therefore if they do poorly they do not feel the need to change as they do not have to answer to consumers
Evaluation for lower standards
Lower standards are due to inadequate funding rather than state control of education
Solutions:
Impose a competition structure (e.g OFSTED)
Make schools pass on a shared culture to ensure good work ethic
Chubb and Moe (1990)
Children from private school do 5% better as they have to answer to consumers
Therefore we should introduce marketisation (process of making schools into a business)
As it would put control into the consumers hands (with voucher system)
Evaluation for Chubb and Moe
Gerwitz argues that competition between schools only benefits the MC as they can their children into more desirable schools
