DA girls Internal Flashcards
Equal opportunities
Belief that girls and boys and old have equal opportunities is now mainstream thinking
Policies such as GIST and WISE encourage girls to pursue non traditional areas
National curriculum also meant that boys and girls have to study the same thing
Positive role models
1992- 22% headteachers and 49% teachers
2012- 37% headteachers and 61% teachers
Shows girls that they can achieve important roles which reinforced importance of education
GCSE and COURSEWORK
Mitsos and Browne argue that coursework benefits girls as they are more organised and conscientious than boys
Teacher interactions
Girls have positive interactions with teachers as teachers label them as cooperative whereas boys are labelled as disruptive this may lead to self fulfilling prophecy
Abraham- boys are labelled as badly behaved and therefore teachers expect them to behave badly
Challenging stereotypes
Wiener- since the 80s teachers have challenged stereotypes and sexist gendered images and beliefs have been removed from education and instead are replaced by more positive ones this therefore removed a barrier to girls achievement
