Feminisation of education
Sewell- boys fall behind due to schools becoming too feminised
Schools tend to emphasis feminine traits such as methodical working and attentiveness he argues coursework is the major cause and should be replaced with final exams and more emphasis should be placed on outdoor activities
Teacher interactions
Negative labelling by teachers undermines boys confidence therefore if their motivation is low then their achievement would also be low. Teachers expect low standard of work from boys therefore failing to push them to achieve their full potential which results in underachievement

He identified a group “macho lads” this group was hostile to school authority and learning as they saw it as a feminine thing and called boys who didn’t “gay” this could lead to underachievement
