Social control
Reinforces patriarchy to control women
Male gaze and sexual double standards make sure women are seen as sexual objects which further controls them
Male gaze-
Sexual double standard-
Women are seen as sexual objects
Boys and girls are treated differently
Evaluation for social control
Postmodernism- this view is outdated as they believe CAGE is no longer a barrier
Secondary socialisation
Socialises boys and girls into different gender identities
Girls are encouraged to be passive and communicative whilst boys are encouraged to take prestigious subjects like maths and sciences which means they are more likely to get the top jobs in society which further reinforces patriarchy
Evaluation for secondary socialisation
Marxist- schools socialise pupils into the value of capitalism to maintain class inequality rather than gender
Specialist skills
Education passes on gendered skills. Boys are taught skills to perform the instrumental role as the main earners in the family whilst girls are taught subjects to prepare them for the expressive role to take lead in childcare and domestic work and therefore pushed into subjects eg health and social care
Evaluation for specialist skills
Functionalist see this as too negative. Boys and girls choose different subjects because they are naturally better suited to those as that is their biological role
Sifting and sorting
Prepares boys and girl for their different roles in the family and society. Girls are pushed bro more feminine subjects like English and drama whereas maths and science are more male dominated
Evaluation for sifting and sorting
Girls now outperform boys and are more likely to into higher education and are also being encouraged to take prestigious subjects through programs such as GIST and WISE
