New right Flashcards
Name some similarities between new right and functionalism
They believe that some people are naturally more talented than others.
They agree that education should be meritocratic so that everyone works harder.
They believe that education should socialise students into shared values.
They believe in tradition and they both want the nuclear family
What do the new right think the role of education is
Socialisation- Where education should pass on shared national culture to ensure that traditions remain.
Skills- So families do not rely on benefits and that men should be the primary earners and be able to provide for their families.
Why are the new right worried about education
Effects the state control this means that schools are lacking business initiative and are slipping standards since schools hasn’t given pupils the skills to employment so dependency culture has developed.
One size fits all- where the new right believes that the state can not meet peoples needs.
Lower standards-Where state run schools are not accountable to those who use them, this creates lower standards and a less qualified workforce where students will rely on benefits
What solutions has the new right recommended?
The state should increase competition and that schools make sure to pass shared culture so that people have good work ethic.
What study supports the new rights view on education
Chubb and Moe- Where state schools should improve standards and introduce marketisation, this is the introductions of consumer choice and competition between suppliers in areas run by the state.
And the introduction of a voucher system where each family would be given a voucher to spend on buying education from a school of their choice, the vouchers would be the main income for the school so it have to meet the demands of parents in order to survive.
Ao3 for voucher system
Gerwitz argues that the competition between schools benefits the middle class since they can afford to get their children into a more desirable school.
