Feminism Flashcards
Ao1 social control
Education reinforces patriarchy and controls women this is done through different subject choices and the male gaze at school to make sure that women are seen as sexual objects which controls their behavior.
Ao3 social control
Functionalist view this as too negative and that boys and girls choose different subjects because they are naturally suited to different subjects, girls are more likely to choose childcare as this is their biological role boys choosing engineering.
Ao1 secondary socialisation
education system socializes boys and girls into different gender identities and boys are encouraged to take subjects such as maths and science. This gives boys the best jobs and this reinforces patriarchy.
Ao3 secondary socialisation
Marxist point out that this ignores the most important conflict which is class and that schools actually socialise pupils into the values of capitalism which maintains class inequality.
Ao1 specialist skills
Education system passes on the skills but these are gendered.
Boys are taught the skills which are instrumental since they are the main earners in the family. Girls are prepared for the expressive role since they usually take the lead in childcare and domestic work so they take subjects such as health and social care to prepare them for this.
Ao3 specialist skills
Post modernists would see this as outdated and boys and girls now have a choice and education can lead them to whatever is best suited to them as individuals as gender is no longer a barrier.
Ao1 sifting and sorting
The school prepares boys and girls for different roles in both family and society.
This reinforces gender so boys get the most powerful jobs in society even though girls get better results and there is a glass ceiling which is a hidden barrier.
Ao3 sifting and sorting
Girls now are likely to go further in education which undermines the feminist view that girls are being prepared to fulfill only the expressive roles.
However feminists point out that even though girls get better results and go to higher education they still do not achieve the top jobs in society this proves that patriarchy still exists.
