What are the female sex hormones called
Oestrogen and progesterone
What is ovulation
When an egg is realised from the ovary to the Fallopian tube. Occurs middle of menstrual cycle.
What is the menstrual cycle
• include menopause
If the egg isn’t fertilised it dies.
Unwanted lining of womb and egg flows out the body. (Uterus - vagina - body)
Menopause occurs at age of 45-55
Explain sperms journey
Sperm is made and stored in testes
- testes is in pouch of skin called scrotum
- sperm travels from testes to sperm duct to penis.
- on its way it mixed with semen
- the semen and sperm spurt from penis into valine
Fertilisation
A perm goes up through vagina into Fallopian tube. It occurs when egg and sperm unite
Sexual intercourse
- blood vessels in penis fill causing it to be stiff
- semen which has lots of sperm is realised into vagina
Pregnancy
- egg implants in lining of womb, it’s called embryo
- grows for 40 weeks. After 8 it’s called foetus
- foetus protected my amniotic fluid
- umbilical cord attaches foetus to mom at placenta
Healthy pregnancy
- avoid smoking, alcohol, drugs
- eat healthy diet e.g coeliac acid

Unwanted pregnancy
- low self esteem
- feeling used
- sti (sexually transmitted infections)
Birth (5)
- women giving birth are in labour
- bag of amniotic fluid bursts, womb begins to contract
- cervix must open wide
- when baby’s out, umbilical cord is cut and clamped
- placenta passes out after. Called afterbirth
Name the female sex organs and function (4)
Ovaries: produce and store eggs
Fallopian tube: links ovaries to womb (uterus)
Uterus/womb: developing baby grows here. Neck of uterus called cervix
Vagina: (birth canal), tube from cervix to outside body
