New Hydrological Cycle Flashcards
What is the largest water store
Oceans - they contain 97% of global water
How much does freshwater store?
2.5%
Describe the Hadley cell
Air rises at the equator (the doldrums) this hot air rieses, and then sinks as it meets the cooler ferrel cell.
At this meeting precipitation tends to occur, the air travels southwards heating up as it does
It then has enough heat to rise up again at the doldrums commencing cycle again
Describe the polar cells
Cold air sinks near the arctic circle, this cools and condenses to form precipitation over northern latitudes
The air then travels southwards heating until it reaches the warm air from the ferrel cell
The air then rises causing dry conditions for land beneath, air then travels northwards cooling as it does
Describe the ferrel cell
The middle of the ITCZ, air circulation is determined by the Hadley and polar cells either side similar to a cog system
