Tectonic Activity EQ2 Flashcards
What does the volcanic exposivity index show
A numeric scale which measures the relative explosively of historical eruptions
What does the VEI measure
Volume of products ,rupturing cloud height and qualitative observations
What are some limitations of the VEI
All material is considered the same -density and size not taken into account
It does not consider the force of eruption
Does not measure the global atmospheric impacts
Why is the Moment magnitude scale good
It captures all the different seismic waves from an earthquake giving better idea of shaking and possible damage
What is areal extent
Are affected by the event
City country global
What is spatial predictability
Does it occur in the same area of world frequently
What are socio economic and physical vulnerabilities
Population density
Population demographics
Physical characteristics
Reliance on technology
Human attitudes
What are the 3 capacity’s to cope
Predication
Preparation
Protection
Why are hazard profiles useful
Allow countries to specifically look at disaster and help in future events
Can help to reduce people’s vulnerability
Why is pressure and release model use ful
Considers different socio economic factors and how these come together to create disaster
It is still an estimation of how severe the disaster is when human and physical conditions apply
Why must locational context be looked at
Can affect issues like decision making and poverty for example many countries where affected by colonialism and by western powers
What does the world risk report say about vulnerabilities in growing city’s
High vulnerability due to density and lack of regulation and poor planing
China India
Why do volcanoes have different impacts
Boundaries - different plate boundaries create more energy and magma build up - constructive destructive. Japan v Hawaii
Threats - composite volcanoes have phyroclastic flows and large amounts of tephra
Shield volcanoes have less explosive basaltic lace which flows much further- daily management needed
Human activities - some pops are more vulnerable
Demographics
Density
Predict plan prepare protect
Why do earthquakes and tsunamis have different impacts
Boundaries - different plate boundaries build more stress
Threats -depth of earthquake , geology effects liquefaction
Human activities -attitudes of locals
Globalisation of place
Often occurring events
Demographics
