new Flashcards
1
Q
What is septic shock?
A
- result of severe infection in which toxins are generated which damage vessel walls
- plasma leaks out of damaged walls thus low volume of fluid
- leaked fluid collects in respiratory system
- leads to vasodilation
2
Q
What is neurogenic shock
A
- damage to spinal chord or cervical levels which damage control of size and vascular tone of vessels
*
3
Q
What is anaphylactic shock
A
- wide spread vascular dilation, increased permeability, and bronchoconstriction caused by allergic reaction
- combination of poor oxygentaion and poor profusion can be fatal
4
Q
What is psychogenic shock
A
- sudden reaction of the nervous sytem that creates temporary widespread vasodilation resulting from fainting (syncope)
5
Q
What is the early stage of shock where the body can compensate? What is the late stage called? What is the last stage?
A
- compensated shock
- decompensated shock
- irreversible shock
6
Q
Whats the difference between spontaneous, simple pneumothorax, and tension?
A
- spontaneous: people born with or develop weak areas on surface of the lungs. Occasionally weak areas will rupture allowing air to leak into the pleaural space.
- expected in patients with sudden chest pain and shortness of breath without known cause - simple: result of blunt trauma resulting fractured ribs.
- hard to diagnose as lung must collapse significantly for decreased breath sounds to be heard.
- simple: result of blunt trauma resulting fractured ribs.
- occurs when there is significant air in the pleural space which causes complete collapse of affected lung, and pushes mediastinum itno oppsoit pleural cavity.
- common in blunt trauma where rib fractures lung or bronchus
