NeuroRegeneration: Bemis Flashcards
In the CNS, there is no repair because of the formation of what?
Glial scar
What are the inhibitory proteins of repair to the CNS?
NoGo, MAG, Omgp
Describe Wallerian degeneration.
Occurs in a peripheral nerve. It is degeneration of the axon distal to the site of transection.
How does repair work in the PNS?
After injury, the Schwann cells detach from axons and start proliferating to help the recruited macrophages clear the cellular and myelin debris. At the same time, expression of stimulating factors by Schwann cells create a favorable environment for nerve regrowth toward the target organ (may not track correctly).
Describe chromatolysis.
After damage, neuronal cytoplasmic pallor, nucleus pushed to side. Dissolution of Nissl bodies (ribosomal clumps also pushed to side).
What is pluripotency?
The potential to differentiate into any somatic cell.
