Neuromuscular Diseases Flashcards
What are the 4 categories of Neuromuscular disease
Motorneurons, Neuropathyes, NMJ and Myopathies
What is the common Motor neuron disease affecting both UMN and LMN
MND
Signs/symptoms of MND
○ Muscle wasting ○ Fasicultions ○ Increased/decreased tone ○ Generalised weakness ○ Reflexes preserved until late/or exaggerated ○ No sensory loss ○ Cranial nerves spared § Except Bulbar (IX, X, XI andXII)
UMN diseases
○ Hereditary spastic paraplegia
○ Adrenomyeloneuropathy X linked
○ Primary lateral sclerosis
LMN diseases
○ Spinal Muscle Atrophy
○ Progressive Muscular atrophy
Diseases at the MNJ
MG, LEMS and Botulism
Characteristics of MG
§ Abs to Ach receptors that induce exocytosis of receptor and inflammation
§ History of fatiguability upon exertion
§ Early involvement of extraocular muscles and lid opening muscles
§ No muscle wasting
Reflexes and sensation uneffected
What is LEMS
Abs to Ca2+ at the Pre-synaptic junction
Action of Botulism toxin
Inhibits release of ACh by SNARE protein at junction
Causes of Focal neuropathies
Compression
Causes of Multi-Focal neuropathies
Ischemia
Other causes of acute and Chronic neuropathies
Damage to axons or dymyleinating diseases
Causes of acute neuropathies
§ Dymyelinating □ GBS □ AIDS seroconversion □ Lymphoma § Axonal □ Vasculitis □ Thiamine deficiency
Causes of chronic neuropathies
Everything under the sun
Causes of Myopathies
Everything under the sun but of note, dystrophies and myolitis, statins
